Day 6: Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, Jungle Boat Cruise
Close to the Nicaraguan border, in the far north of the country, the Cano Negro wildlife tour offers a completely different experience of Costa Rican nature: not a trail through dense forest, but a slow boat through a labyrinth of river channels, where the wildlife comes to the water's edge and the pace of observation is dictated entirely by the current.
The boat moves quietly through narrow channels lined with tropical vegetation. Caimans lie motionless on mudbanks, basilisk lizards run improbably across the water surface, sloths hang in the riverside trees, and overhead, a constant procession of herons, roseate spoonbills, anhingas and kingfishers works the waterway. This is Costa Rica birdwatching at its most effortless: you simply sit, and the birds appear.
It is the most meditative day of the entire journey. No hiking, no speed, no particular destination. Just the boat, the river, the animals and the green tunnel of the forest above.
After lunch, the return journey leads to Origins Lodge, a premium eco lodge set among the trees with small villas, deep forest silence and the kind of stillness that city life makes it easy to forget exists.
Included: boat cruise, lunch, eco lodge accommodation
