10 Days in the Most Biodiverse Place on Earth

Top hightlights

Costa Rica is one of the few places on earth where the landscape transforms completely within a single day's drive. Rainforests give way to cool volcanic highlands. Pacific coastline appears around a bend in the road. The jungle begins, quite literally, at the edge of the lodge terrace. This Costa Rica luxury tour is built around that extraordinary variety: ten days that move through volcanoes, cloud-edged highlands, remote river reserves and the wild Osa Peninsula, one of the most biologically dense regions in all of Central America. The 10 day Costa Rica itinerary stays comfortable throughout. Small, carefully chosen lodges, attentive private guiding and smooth logistics mean you encounter the country at its most intimate without ever feeling like you are on an expedition. This is exactly why discerning travelers choose a Costa Rica private tour over a group package: the pace, the access and the stillness are entirely different.

Arenal volcano tour: the most iconic natural landmark in the country, seen from hanging bridges above the canopy, from hot spring pools at its base, and from forest trails where sloths move slowly through the branches.
Corcovado National Park tour: widely considered the most biodiverse national park in Central America. Scarlet macaws, peccaries, crocodiles, monkeys and the ghost-like presence of jaguars in the deep forest.
Rio Celeste Costa Rica: a river that turns impossibly bright turquoise at the point where two streams meet, deep in the northern rainforest. One of the most visually extraordinary places in the country.
Cano Negro wildlife tour: a slow, meditative boat cruise through narrow jungle channels, watching caimans, basilisk lizards, sloths and dozens of tropical bird species at the water's edge.
Del Cano island snorkeling: volcanic reefs and coral platforms circling a remote Pacific island, with rays, sea turtles, tropical fish and, in season, humpback whales in the water around the boat.
Costa Rica hot springs: warm thermal pools in the forest at the base of Arenal volcano. The steam rises, the jungle surrounds you, and the day ends in exactly the right way.
Chocolate and coffee: a full sensory day in the Arenal highlands, from cacao plantation to roastery, with tastings at every stage. Plus a Costa Rica birdwatching opportunity throughout the route, with toucans, macaws, motmots and hundreds of forest species visible from lodge terraces and trail edges alike.
You'll ascend to the crater of Poás Volcano- coffee plantations gradually fall away beneath you, while white steam hangs over the volcano itself. After the highlands, the route leads you to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where narrow trails wind through the rainforest, suspension bridges sway over the streams, and the roar of water reaches you long before you see the cascades.

Your 10-Day VIP Costa Rica Itinerary

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in San Jose, Capital of Costa Rica
Your Costa Rica vacation begins the moment you land. At Juan Santamaria International Airport, a representative will be waiting to collect you and transfer you to your hotel in the city. The arrival experience sets the tone immediately: San Jose sits in a central valley ringed by volcanoes and mountain ridges, and even the drive from the airport offers glimpses of the green, layered landscape that characterizes the country.
The city itself rewards a gentle first evening. Coffee shops open early and stay busy late. The local markets smell of tropical fruit, fresh-ground beans and the particular sweetness of air after a short afternoon downpour. It is the kind of city that asks nothing of you on a first night: simply arrive, breathe the air and let the journey begin.
Costa Rica has become one of the defining destinations of luxury eco lodge Costa Rica travel in Latin America, and for good reason. The infrastructure for thoughtful, unhurried wilderness access is genuinely world-class. Over the next ten days you will understand exactly why.

Included: airport transfer and hotel accommodation
Day 1: Arrival in San Jose, Capital of Costa Rica -0
Day 2: Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
The morning begins with a drive through the central valley, where the city gives way quickly to coffee plantations climbing the hillsides in neat, dark-green rows. The road rises steadily toward the crater of Poas volcano Costa Rica, one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the country.
At the crater rim, the scale of things becomes apparent. Inside, a turquoise lake sits in a bowl of volcanic rock, and from the fumaroles along the crater walls, columns of white steam drift upward into the cool highland air. The smell of sulfur is faint but unmistakable. Your guide will explain the geology and the ecosystem of the surrounding cloud forest, where the vegetation is entirely different from the lowland jungle you will encounter later in the trip.
After the volcano, the route continues to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens: a series of cascades falling through dense tropical forest, connected by a trail that also passes a hummingbird gallery, a butterfly farm and terrariums of the brilliantly colored poison dart frogs that Costa Rica is famous for. The sound of the water arrives before the waterfalls themselves do, and walking toward that sound through the rainforest is one of the quiet pleasures of this 10 day luxury Costa Rica itinerary.

Included: lunch

If you enjoy volcanic landscapes and cloud forests, you might also love our luxury Colombia tour with the Coffee Triangle and active volcanoes.
Day 2: Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens -1
Day 3: Journey to Arenal Volcano, Hanging Bridges and Sloths
After breakfast, the road leads north and west to the base of Arenal volcano tour territory: a great, near-perfect cone rising from the surrounding forest, its upper slopes usually wrapped in cloud. The route passes through areas of solidified lava from the major eruption of 1968, where the forest is slowly, patiently reclaiming what the volcano took.
The afternoon brings one of the most distinctive experiences of the entire trip: the Costa Rica hanging bridges of the Arenal forest. Suspended high above the canopy on steel cables, the walkways give you an entirely different view of the rainforest: not from below, looking up into the green darkness, but from within the upper story, surrounded by the movement of birds and the sound of wind through the highest branches. From up here, the density of the jungle is almost shocking.
Later, a guided walk through the forest at the volcano's base offers the best conditions for spotting the animal that has become, perhaps unexpectedly, one of Costa Rica's most beloved ambassadors: the sloth. Moving with a deliberate slowness that seems almost philosophical, two-toed and three-toed sloths cling to cecropia trees at forest edge. Toucans, howler monkeys, poison dart frogs and leaf-cutter ants complete the picture.
The day ends at the Costa Rica hot springs near Arenal. Warm, mineral-rich water fills a series of pools surrounded by tropical vegetation. Steam rises into the night air, the jungle sounds continue all around, and the evening is nothing but ease.

Included: accommodation at lodge near Arenal
Day 3: Journey to Arenal Volcano, Hanging Bridges and Sloths -2
Day 4: Arenal, Chocolate Tour, Don Juan Coffee Plantation and Canopy
Today is a day of flavors, altitude and speed, in that order.
The morning begins on a cacao plantation, where the entire journey of chocolate is traced from tree to finished bar. Walking among the cacao plants, you learn how the pods are harvested, the beans fermented and dried, the paste ground and tempered. The tasting at the end, with wild tropical spices and local fruit, is the kind of thing that changes the way you think about chocolate afterward.
From cacao, the route moves to the Don Juan coffee plantation, where Costa Rican coffee is grown at the altitude that gives it its particular character: clean, mild, with none of the harshness that mass-produced blends can carry. The process here is treated with the same seriousness as fine wine production. The roasting, the sorting, the cupping: by the end, the morning espresso back home will never feel quite the same.
The afternoon belongs entirely to the canopy. A Costa Rica vacation is incomplete without at least one moment of pure, uncomplicated exhilaration, and the canopy zipline over the Arenal forest provides exactly that. Steel cables carry you high above the treetops, moving fast enough through the forest for the toucans and parrots in the upper branches to become a blur of color. It is the jungle seen at speed, and it is tremendous.

Included: chocolate tour, coffee tour, canopy experience

For those who love hot springs and active volcanoes, we recommend our signature Argentina tour combining Buenos Aires, Patagonia, and Iguazu Falls
Day 4: Arenal, Chocolate Tour, Don Juan Coffee Plantation and Canopy -3
Day 5: Rio Celeste, Sky-Blue River and Scenic Waterfall
There is a local legend that says when God was painting the sky, he rinsed his brushes in this river. Looking at Rio Celeste Costa Rica, it is not difficult to understand why.
The trail into the national park passes through the dense, humid forest of the northern highlands, where the air grows heavier and the sounds of the trees louder as you descend. The color of the river appears gradually: first a pale shimmer through the vegetation, then, at the exact point where two mountain streams converge at a place called Los Tenideros, the water becomes a vivid, almost electric turquoise. The phenomenon is caused by volcanic minerals, but the explanation makes it no less extraordinary to witness.
Further along the trail, the Rio Celeste waterfall drops through a frame of dark volcanic rock and forest green into a pool of the same impossible blue. It is one of those places that looks better in person than in any photograph, which is saying something.
After the hike, the evening brings the Costa Rica all inclusive luxury experience of the trip in its purest form: a VIP villa set in the jungle, surrounded by thermal springs, total quiet and a forest that seems to breathe around you.

Included: Rio Celeste guided hike, villa accommodation

If you're drawn to unique waterways and jungle wildlife, explore our Brazil expedition tours featuring the Amazon and the Pantanal wetlands.
Day 5: Rio Celeste, Sky-Blue River and Scenic Waterfall -4
Day 6: Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, Jungle Boat Cruise
Close to the Nicaraguan border, in the far north of the country, the Cano Negro wildlife tour offers a completely different experience of Costa Rican nature: not a trail through dense forest, but a slow boat through a labyrinth of river channels, where the wildlife comes to the water's edge and the pace of observation is dictated entirely by the current.
The boat moves quietly through narrow channels lined with tropical vegetation. Caimans lie motionless on mudbanks, basilisk lizards run improbably across the water surface, sloths hang in the riverside trees, and overhead, a constant procession of herons, roseate spoonbills, anhingas and kingfishers works the waterway. This is Costa Rica birdwatching at its most effortless: you simply sit, and the birds appear.
It is the most meditative day of the entire journey. No hiking, no speed, no particular destination. Just the boat, the river, the animals and the green tunnel of the forest above.
After lunch, the return journey leads to Origins Lodge, a premium eco lodge set among the trees with small villas, deep forest silence and the kind of stillness that city life makes it easy to forget exists.

Included: boat cruise, lunch, eco lodge accommodation
Day 6: Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, Jungle Boat Cruise -5
Day 7: Flight to Drake Bay, Gateway to Corcovado
From Arenal, the route returns briefly to San Jose before a light aircraft carries you south and west to Drake Bay on the Pacific coast of the Osa Peninsula. This short flight is one of the defining moments of the Costa Rica VIP tour format: in under an hour, the volcanic north is left entirely behind and the wild, wet, almost roadless south appears below.
Drake Bay is the entry point for Corcovado National Park tour territory. The difference is immediately perceptible. There are fewer roads here and more boats. The air is heavier and warmer. The forest presses close to the water. At night, the sky is genuinely dark.
Corcovado is considered one of the most biologically rich national parks in Central America. No large resort developments exist here. The forest begins at the shoreline and extends, uninterrupted, for kilometers into the interior. Tapirs, four species of monkey, crocodiles, scarlet macaws and, moving silently through the deepest parts of the reserve, jaguars that are occasionally captured on camera traps set up by researchers.
Tonight's lodge sits directly within this world. The sounds of the rainforest are not background noise here. They are the whole point.

Included: domestic flight, lodge accommodation
Day 7: Flight to Drake Bay, Gateway to Corcovado -6
Day 8: Corcovado National Park, Rainforest Hiking
Welcome to one of the wildest places on earth. The Corcovado jungle hiking experience begins early, before the heat of the day settles in, and the trail leads immediately into primary rainforest of a density and scale that is genuinely humbling.
The air smells of wet wood, leaf litter and the faint salt of the Pacific somewhere beyond the trees. The botanical diversity here is extraordinary: thousands of plant species, many of them endemic, including the Costa Rican walnut tree and the milk tree, which produces a sap local communities have used for generations. Walking through this forest, it becomes clear why scientists describe Corcovado as one of the highest concentrations of biodiversity on the planet.
Wildlife appears at irregular, unhurried intervals. Scarlet macaws fly in pairs overhead, their red and blue trailing across the sky like brushstrokes. Troops of spider and howler monkeys move through the canopy. White-lipped peccaries root through the undergrowth. Crocodiles lie half-submerged in river crossings. And occasionally, after rain, a guide will stop on the trail and point to the soft earth beside it: the large, clear print of a jaguar, still fresh.
This is the day that stays with people longest. Not because of any single sighting, but because of the cumulative feeling of walking through a forest that is genuinely, deeply, magnificently alive.

Included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Wildlife enthusiasts will also love our combined Peru and Ecuador tour with the Galapagos Islands and Amazon rainforest.
Day 8: Corcovado National Park, Rainforest Hiking -7
Day 9: Del Cano Island, Snorkeling, Dolphins and Whales
A boat carries you out from the Osa Peninsula coastline to Del Cano Island, a small, protected island in the Pacific that sits above some of the most spectacular underwater terrain in Costa Rica. This is Del Cano island snorkeling at its finest: volcanic rock formations and coral platforms descend beneath the surface, providing habitat for stingrays, sea turtles, moray eels, enormous schools of tropical fish and the occasional reef shark moving slowly through the blue.
The water around Del Cano is usually exceptionally clear, and at the right depth the volcanic geology of the seafloor becomes almost as interesting as the marine life above it. Starfish cluster on the rock. Parrotfish work the coral. And when you surface and look back toward the Osa Peninsula, the forest comes down almost to the waterline, a wall of green against the Pacific sky.
This is also Costa Rica whale watching territory. Humpback whales migrate through these waters twice a year, and dolphins are present year-round. A good morning on the boat frequently includes both, along with the sight of frigatebirds wheeling high above the island in thermals they seem to have discovered long before humans arrived.
In the afternoon, a light aircraft returns you to San Jose for a final night before departure.

Included: boat excursion, snorkeling, domestic flight back to San Jose. Breakfast
Day 9: Del Cano Island, Snorkeling, Dolphins and Whales -8
Day 10: Transfer to San Jose Airport and Departure
After breakfast, a transfer takes you to Juan Santamaria International Airport. Your 10 day Costa Rica itinerary is complete. We would be delighted if you chose to book Costa Rica tour experiences again with us in future.
Over the past ten days, this Costa Rica luxury tour has taken you from the sulfurous rim of Poas volcano to the hanging bridges of Arenal, from the turquoise river of Rio Celeste to the boat channels of Cano Negro, and finally to the extraordinary rainforest of Corcovado and the clear Pacific waters of Del Cano Island. The landscape changed around you almost every day.
But the thing most people carry home from Costa Rica is not a particular view or a specific animal sighting. It is a feeling: the feeling of a country where the natural world is genuinely close, where sloths cross the road and toucans land on breakfast tables and the jungle never quite stops moving, even at night.
It is a rare thing to find, and this best Costa Rica tours route is designed specifically to put you at the center of it. We hope to see you back soon.

Included: breakfast, airport transfer

Buenas noches Viera.

Pavel, good afternoon!
My name is Marina Ryzhuk. A few weeks ago, our VIP group from St. Petersburg visited Rio with you. I believe you remember them well.
I’d like to thank you for your excellent work with our rather demanding guests. After the trip, they spoke very highly of your services. Our particularly important gentlemen especially appreciated your personal approach — you managed to find a special way to connect with them.
Through your tours, they were able to truly feel the city, which is absolutely priceless on such trips.
Thank you!

Anna, thank you very much on behalf of our tourists, the Chubar family, who visited in February.
They praised your excellent and well-organized work and were very pleased!
They said everything was as precise as with the Germans :)
REVIEW №11- Mikhail and Elena Leksikov
Good afternoon, we were in Rio de Janeiro March 15–17, 2020. Not for long, but it was very full of experiences.
The driver who met us at the airport, to our joy, spoke English and even a little Russian. He pointed out where we could walk and eat.
The next day we met Eleonora, a GUIDE and a Person with a capital P. We were lucky to visit Corcovado and see Brazil’s main symbol. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make it to Sugarloaf Mountain due to the coronavirus quarantine.
Instead of the canceled excursion, Eleonora gave us an impromptu city tour. She tells stories in an interesting way, knows a lot, but doesn’t overwhelm with facts, shows where the best photo spots are, and even took pictures herself. Thanks to her, we managed to get coffee and souvenirs—it turned out not so easy to find what we wanted.
She was very caring and concerned for us—even after we went to Búzios, she kept checking how we were, suggesting where to go and what to see and buy.

A very close-knit, friendly team, always ready to help.
REVIEW №12- Nikita, Saga Tour Operator
Good afternoon, Alexandra!
Thank you very much for the organization and support.
The tourist was very happy and said everything was top-notch :)
Paraty is definitely a place to recommend—it leaves no one indifferent. Porto Real is probably in the best spot on that coast.

Thank you!
Wishing you success in everything!

Alexandra!
Our clients have returned, very satisfied.
They left a special review about the guide in Quito:
In Quito, we had a wonderful guide named David.
During our three-day visit to Quito, your guide David was with us. He made our stay in Quito rich, interesting, and unforgettable. Not only does he know a lot about the city, the country, and its nature, he is also a truly interesting person himself. Our three days were filled with conversations about everything. Our knowledge of Ecuador is now practically encyclopedic—we learned so much. And the most important part was that it all happened through engaging discussions.
We’d like to highlight his punctuality, his thoughtfulness, and his attention to detail. His advice on restaurants and places to walk during our free time was invaluable. We’ve met many guides—this is the 103rd country we’ve visited. We don’t always get so lucky with a guide, but David was exceptional. Thank you to him and to all of you!!!

THANK YOU FOR THE EXCELLENT ORGANIZATION.

A poem dedicated to the Ada Tours guide!
In Rio, where sunlight meets golden skies,
Our guide Paulo greets us with kind, warm eyes.
He knows the whole city, where secrets lie deep,
And welcomes each guest with joy that’s sincere.
“Come on,” he says, “to Corcovado,
Christ calls you up to heaven’s shadow.
Then on to the beach, where waves beat the shore,
Copacabana invites us once more.”

Paulo will show us where samba resides,
Where Brazil’s true heartbeat endlessly thrives.
In favelas he sees not poverty, but life,
Where sparks of hope conquer struggle and strife.

With a smile, he leads us along every way,
Paulo’s our friend, our golden pathway.
A Brazilian guide, a master of wonder,
With him, Rio feels closer to heaven’s splendor.

This poem is from me, for you.

Good afternoon, Alexandra.
I want to thank you for organizing our vacation.
Our guides were simply outstanding – top class.
Pavel knows so much about Brazil and Rio in particular. He’s very easy to talk to, communicates effortlessly with people, is always learning something new, and gladly shares his knowledge. An excellent guide and a wonderful person.
And Tiago – we spent two days with him. He’s amazing. Even after 18 years of work, he hasn’t lost the ability to genuinely admire the beauty of the waterfalls. He still takes photos like it’s the first time.
With your guides, it’s never boring! Thank you once again!!!
REVIEW №34- Tatyana Yakubova
Hello, Alexandra.
I am sending you the full version of the tourists’ feedback:
We are publishing our review after our trip through Argentina–Uruguay–Brazil with my wife. It is always a pleasure to share emotions when they are entirely positive! We want to thank the entire Ada Tours team who helped us organize the perfect journey. From the very idea of the trip to its completion, you were always in touch with us, tailoring excursions and building the itinerary based on our requests, while also giving valuable advice and making all necessary adjustments. Everything exceeded our already high expectations – the trip was very rich and exciting! We recommend this route to everyone, especially when its organization can be entrusted to professionals☺️
We would especially like to thank you for selecting wonderful guides and drivers. At every stage, everything went like clockwork – we never missed a single thing, and the drivers were always extremely polite and pleasant.
Our journey began in Buenos Aires with a city tour. We visited the main square – Plaza de Mayo, cathedrals, and saw key architectural monuments from the Spanish colonial period, as well as the modern financial center. We explored the vibrant and colorful La Boca district and the main city ports. We were lucky with the weather, and the tour was fascinating. The guide advised us to visit several additional places, and we chose the Recoleta Cemetery, where many of Argentina’s most famous figures are buried. After the tour, we asked to be dropped off near the entrance and bought tickets. The only issue we faced was that we couldn’t pay in cash, but other visitors kindly helped us with the payment. The cemetery left a strong impression on us – we would definitely recommend it as a must-visit.
In the evening, we went to a tango show that exceeded all expectations. We watched authentic Argentine tango performed to live music, enjoyed Argentine wine, and saw other artists showcasing traditional instruments. The show was incredible and allowed us to truly experience the local culture.
The next morning we traveled by ferry to Montevideo. The journey was very comfortable; we would only recommend bringing snacks and an extra layer of clothing, as despite the heat, the ferry was air-conditioned and quite cool inside. We loved the city itself – we managed to see all the main sights and stroll along the coast. Midway through the tour, a wonderful lunch was arranged for us, followed by a light meal at the hotel.
After Montevideo, we continued as planned to Patagonia, where we spent just under three days. This place amazed us – it’s like nowhere else on Earth. From our hotel, we could see the vast Lake Argentino with its turquoise waters (sometimes flamingos can be seen there, though unfortunately we didn’t). The scenery of the Patagonian steppe and mountains will remain in our hearts for a long time. We took an excursion to the Perito Moreno Glacier – a unique wonder, truly beyond words. Probably the most powerful impression of the whole trip came from this glacier and the national park. It’s something everyone should witness with their own eyes.
After our mini-journey in Patagonia, we went on to Iguassu Falls, viewing them from both the Argentine and Brazilian sides. The sight was utterly unique and magical! Jungle, soaring eagles, butterflies, monkeys, and an endless chain of waterfalls stretching beyond sight. The park’s trails are very well maintained, with rest areas to escape the heat and humidity, and facilities everywhere.
The final stop of our trip was Brazil’s tourist capital – Rio de Janeiro. We visited the Christ the Redeemer statue, with its breathtaking views of the city, then spent time on Copacabana Beach, enjoying the Atlantic Ocean.
Overall, our journey was amazing and very full! And most importantly – as comfortable as possible, considering how vast the geography of our route was. Thank you!
Once again, thank you!

Sincerely,
