The secrets of Old Rio de Janeiro
(4-hour private guided- tour, minimum 2 people)
On this tour, you'll uncover the secrets of Old Rio de Janeiro. Your guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the historic city center, where you'll learn about Rio's colonial past, its rituals, churches, and the origin of its name — founded in 1565.
As you walk through the historical heart of the city, you'll encounter many remnants of its rich past, such as the Candelária Church, built in 1775, and the São Bento Monastery, a masterpiece of baroque architecture.
You'll visit the famous Lapa Arches (Arcos da Lapa), constructed in 1732 as an aqueduct to bring water from the Carioca River to the city center. The Municipal Theater, designed by Europe’s finest artists, evokes the elegance of the Paris Opera House.
Next, you’ll head to November Square (Praça XV de Novembro), home to some of the city’s most important landmarks: the Imperial Palace, from whose balcony slavery was abolished; the Tiradentes Palace; the Cathedral, originally built in 1808 as a royal chapel; and the 16th-century Carmelite Monastery.
At Boticário Square, you’ll find charming old buildings adorned with mosaics and surrounded by ancient trees, offering a glimpse into Rio’s artistic past.
Finally, you'll visit the unique Metropolitan Cathedral, capable of holding up to 20,000 people — an architectural marvel of modern Brazil. The tour concludes at the historic Confeitaria Colombo, a beloved café where Rio’s elite have gathered for generations to enjoy afternoon tea and coffee. Don’t miss the pastries — their unforgettable flavor will linger long after your visit! (Food and drinks at Colombo are not included.)
