How to Choose the Best DMC in Chile (2026)

Author: Anna Avanesova, Founder and CEO Published: 18-10-2026 Updated: 18-10-2026

Anna Avanesova leads Ada Tours from Rio de Janeiro and has around 20 years of first hand operating experience across Brazil and Latin America.

The Atacama and the southern parks are separate flights from Santiago, so the order of stops shapes every Chile quote.

TLDR: Chile has no single best DMC. The right partner depends on the route: Atacama altitude, Torres del Paine park passes or Easter Island flights. Check each operator's Sernatur registration, association memberships and quote basis before you choose, Ada Tours included.

Chile runs 4,270 kilometers from north to south, according to the Spanish Foreign Ministry's country fact sheet. A trip that takes in the desert, Santiago and Patagonia is really three trips joined by flights, and each one has its own rules, passes and seasons.

An agency asking which DMC handles Chile well is asking who knows those rules in practice: how altitude reshapes a day, how park passes are sold, which airline serves the island and what a hotel can legally charge in VAT.

How do Chile's distances shape a DMC quote?

A desert-to-Patagonia trip in Chile needs a return through Santiago, and the quote should show that leg. Our 2026 seven-day Atacama and Patagonia program flies Santiago to Calama for San Pedro de Atacama, returns to Santiago for a night, then flies to Puerto Natales for Torres del Paine.

Calama's El Loa airport is the main gateway to the desert, about one hour from San Pedro de Atacama, according to Chile's national tourism site. Every hop like this is a flight, a transfer and a place where a delay spreads through the rest of the days.

Two cable cars above Santiago with the city's towers and the Andes behind.
Our Chile programs return to Santiago between regions, so a night in the capital belongs in the quote.

A quote for a multi-region Chile trip should name:

  • each domestic flight, who books it and who carries the cost if it changes;
  • every night in Santiago between regions;
  • transfer times, such as Calama airport to San Pedro de Atacama;
  • park passes, and who buys them;
  • pacing days after high-altitude or long-haul legs.

What does altitude change in the Atacama?

The Atacama's best-known sunrise sits high enough to change the plan. The Tatio geysers lie above 4,300 meters, according to Chile's national tourism site, and they are most dramatic at sunrise, which means a pre-dawn start from San Pedro de Atacama.

The UK's National Travel Health Network and Centre reports that about 9 to 25 percent of unacclimatized people ascending to 2,000 to 3,000 meters develop acute mountain sickness, against 35 to 50 percent of those ascending to 3,500 to 4,500 meters. Above 3,000 meters it advises against raising sleeping altitude by more than 500 meters a day and recommends a rest day every three or four days.

Sequence is the lever a DMC controls. Our 2026 seven-day program puts the geyser sunrise on day four, after a half-day and a full-day excursion around San Pedro de Atacama. Ask any DMC where it places its highest day and what it does when a traveler feels unwell.

What should an agency know about Easter Island?

Easter Island needs its own line in a Chile quote. CONAF says the national park is managed jointly with the Ma'u Henua Indigenous community, that visitors must buy an entrance ticket and that LATAM is the only commercial airline flying Santiago to Easter Island.

Easter Island's moai draw most Chile trips to the island, and one commercial airline serves it.

With one airline on the route, a missed flight has no second commercial carrier to fall back on. A DMC should say who holds the ticket and guide bookings, and how much slack the island leg carries before the flight home. In our 12-day Best of Chile program the island comes last, on days 8 to 11, after the desert and Patagonia.

How do park passes and refuges work in Patagonia?

Torres del Paine passes are bought online in advance, and refuges and campsites on the W and O circuits must be booked months ahead, according to Chile's national tourism site. CONAF's official sales portal for park passes is PasesParques.cl.

CONAF changed the Torres del Paine pass structure on 1 May 2026, according to CNN Chile's report of its notice: a one-day entry, or an entry for two or more days valid for up to 10 days, with prices for each visitor category, foreigners included. Chile's national tourism site lists an international adult pass at CLP 32,400 for one day and CLP 48,500 for more than one day (checked 15 October 2026), and the sales portal holds the current rate.

A DMC quoting Patagonia should say who buys the passes, which dates they cover and what happens to a refuge booking if the dates move. In our 2026 seven-day program, the Torres del Paine day runs from Puerto Natales with a 7 a.m. pickup, and the park entrance is included in that day.

What does a Chile quote leave out?

Two lines decide whether two Chile quotes can be compared: park passes and hotel VAT. The worked figures below use stated assumptions and dated rates, so an agency can repeat the sums on its own group.

Two quote lines worked through for a group of 12 travelers (assumptions are illustrative, not an Ada Tours price)
LineAssumptionArithmeticResult
Torres del Paine passes12 foreign adults, one multi-day pass each at CLP 48,500; CLP 987.03 per US dollar (observed dollar, 15 October 2026)12 x 48,500 = CLP 582,000; 582,000 / 987.03About US$590, or US$49 each
Hotel VAT6 twin rooms for 5 nights; net rate US$200 per room night; VAT 19%200 x 1.19 = US$238; difference US$38 x 30 room nightsUS$1,140 between a VAT-exempt and a VAT-charged quote for the same rooms

Chile's tax service, the SII, sets the VAT rate at 19%. Its guidance exempts income that registered hotels receive in foreign currency for services to foreign tourists with no domicile or residence in Chile, and the exemption covers hotel services such as lodging, meals and laundry. A 2012 SII ruling excluded the rental of a hall with banquet service from it.

So the useful questions are whether a DMC's hotel prices assume the exemption, in which currency the hotel is paid and what the traveler must carry. We ask partner agencies to remind travelers to keep the entry form they receive on arrival from Chile's Policía de Investigaciones (PDI), because without it travelers pay the 19% VAT on services, including hotel stays.

How do you check a Chile operator?

Start with Sernatur, Chile's national tourism service. Its national registry of tourism service providers lists travel agencies, adventure tourism operators and guides among its categories, and providers register at registro.sernatur.cl, according to ChileAtiende.

Chilean law requires tourist lodging and adventure tourism providers to enter Sernatur's national classification registry. A decree published in the Diario Oficial on 13 August 2026 recites articles 34 and 38 of Law 20.423 and makes registration mandatory for any provider that wants to join Sernatur programs, fairs or campaigns. Ask each DMC for its registration, whatever its category, and look it up on Sernatur's tourism services search.

Association membership is a second, weaker signal. ACHET, the Chilean association of travel agencies and tour operators, counts inbound wholesalers among its members, and IAATO's directory covers operators that run Antarctic trips. Membership shows that peers know a company. It is not a license, and it is not a safety check.

Then ask which services the DMC runs with its own team and which it contracts from local suppliers, and ask for a named contact for the exact dates.

Where does Ada Tours fit into this?

Ada Tours is a Rio de Janeiro destination management company that works across Brazil and Latin America. It was registered in December 2006 and has operated since 2007. Chile sits inside that regional program rather than standing alone as a Chile-only product.

Valparaíso and Viña del Mar are a day from Santiago in several of our Chile programs.

Our Chile programs include The Best of Chile, which links Santiago, the Atacama Desert, Torres del Paine and Easter Island, and Chile and Argentina Deluxe. Chile also appears in our programs with Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Uruguay.

Which Chile DMCs do agencies compare?

Ada Tours comes first, and the four other operators follow in alphabetical order. The order is not a ranking. Each description comes from the company's own site, checked on 15 October 2026, plus an independent listing where one exists.

Alchemy DMC

Alchemy DMC works across Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, with offices in Buenos Aires and in Providencia, Santiago. Its homepage says it has partnered with travel professionals worldwide for 20 years, and its site shows an E.V.T. travel agency license number, ID 12538. Its service lines are leisure groups and series, high-end travel and incentive travel, meetings and events, and it lists a 24-hour emergency line for its Chile office. Its pages list no prices, and its inquiry page is the route to a quote.

Chile Travel Services

Chile Travel Services SpA is based in Santiago and describes eight services, from DMC programs and group travel to wine programs, helicopter and bus charters and private transportation. Its About page says the team has operated in Chile since 2014 through Chile Wine Travel. Its FAQ says Chile is its core operating focus, where it manages programs directly, and that it coordinates with regional partners for wider South America itineraries. Proposals start from a request form, and no prices are listed.

DMC Chile

DMC Chile is an inbound wholesaler in Santiago. IAATO's member directory lists Destination Management Chile S.A. as a wholesaler founded in December 1989, and ACHET's member list includes dmcchile.cl under inbound wholesalers. DMC Chile calls itself the oldest and largest cruise handling agency in Chile, says it also builds land programs for congresses and incentive travel, and states Travelife Partner certification, with land program requests going to a dedicated email address. It lists no prices.

Southbound Travel

Southbound Travel is headquartered in Puerto Varas and lists six Chile destinations, from the Atacama to Patagonia and Easter Island. Its group page says it handles groups from 8 to more than 500 travelers, coordinates private coaches and national park permits, and has run group tours in Chile for over eight years. The site states Travelife certification, says LATA, ATTA and SITE recognize it, and promises a tailor-made proposal within 48 hours of a request. Registered agents use its online tariff and booking system.

How do you shortlist a Chile DMC?

Six steps keep a Chile search focused on what changes delivery:

  1. Write the route in order, with every domestic flight and every night in Santiago between regions.
  2. Mark the three access points: the Atacama altitude day, the Torres del Paine pass and refuge dates, and the Easter Island flight and park ticket.
  3. Ask each DMC for its Sernatur registration and association memberships, and look them up.
  4. Ask which services the DMC runs with its own team and which it contracts locally.
  5. Ask whether hotel prices assume the VAT exemption, and what the traveler must carry to claim it.
  6. Ask for a named contact for the exact dates, then compare quotes line by line on the same assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ada Tours the best DMC in Chile?

Ada Tours does not claim to be the best DMC in Chile for every agency, because the right partner depends on the route, the group size and whether the trip leaves Chile. We recommend comparing named operators on registration, services run in-house and quote assumptions rather than on a single ranking.

Can Ada Tours plan a Chile trip that combines the desert, Patagonia and Easter Island?

Ada Tours can plan a Chile trip that combines Santiago, the Atacama, Torres del Paine and Easter Island, and our 12-day Best of Chile program is built that way. The flights between regions and the Santiago nights in between are set out in the proposal for the exact dates.

Can Ada Tours combine Chile with Argentina or Brazil in one itinerary?

Ada Tours can combine Chile with Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia or Uruguay in one coordinated itinerary, and several of our 2026 programs already do. That suits an agency that prefers one contact across the route to briefing a separate ground partner in each country.

What should an agency ask a Chile DMC, Ada Tours included, before confirming?

Ada Tours recommends asking for the operator's Sernatur registration, its association memberships and a named contact for the exact dates before confirming any Chile trip. Ask which services the DMC runs with its own team and which it contracts locally, and ask us the same.

Can Ada Tours work under our agency's brand on a Chile trip?

Ada Tours can work under your agency's own brand or as Ada Tours, as you prefer. Rates, commission and payment terms are confirmed for the exact enquiry rather than published.

Do Chilean hotels charge VAT to foreign travelers?

Ada Tours asks partner agencies to remind travelers to keep the entry form they receive on arrival from Chile's Policía de Investigaciones (PDI), because Chile's 19% VAT exemption for foreign tourists applies only under conditions such as payment in foreign currency to a registered hotel. Ask each DMC whether its hotel prices assume the exemption.
