Аrea information | Increasingly, the Mayan world is becoming a favorite destination for travelers seeking a different holiday, one that enables them to enjoy beautiful landscapes, adventure, tropical vegetation and especially, the ability to discover and explore historic sites and ancient cultures. The archaeologists in the Maya world agree that Guatemala was the center of Maya civilization. The findings in the area of Tikal reveal the existence of a complex society with broad scientific knowledge and mathematicians who developed a hieroglyphic writing, not yet fully deciphered, and left notable examples of thier artistic talent. Tikal, located in the Peten jungle, was a spectacular Classic period Maya city during the third and fourth centuries AD. Today we know that there are more than 3,000 Mayan structures in 44 sq km of rainforest in the Peten area, most of them completely covered by thick vegetation. The Peten has a large number of archaeological sites, many of them not as well known as Tikal, but fascinating as well. The most important are: Uaxactún (where the oldest stelae discovered to date), Naj Tunich, Piedras Negras, El Mirador and Ceibal. |
