TLDR Chile's tourism and attractions work best as a route built around a few contrasting regions: Santiago and the wine valleys, the Atacama Desert, and Patagonia. For travellers and agencies, the first choice is which landscape deserves the most time; the flights and extra stops follow from that decision.
A sunset in the Atacama and a walk beneath the peaks of Torres del Paine belong to the same country, but getting between them takes time out of the holiday. Chile boasts some of the most incredible scenery in the world and your trip should include a visit to the Atacama Desert, Patagonia and Santiago!
We suggest choosing the region you most want to experience, then building the journey around it. Adding the Lake District or Easter Island should give the trip a new purpose and enough time to enjoy it.
Choose the main landscape first. Atacama suits a desert-led journey, Patagonia puts mountains and wildlife at the centre, and Santiago connects food, wine and the coast. Chile Travel's regional planning advice recommends different seasons for the north, central valleys and Patagonia, so one national best month is a poor starting point.

These are planning windows, not promises of weather or access. Chile's official climate overview describes rainy southern summers as well as cold northern nights; the attractions below need different clothes and different daily rhythms.
The Atacama brings together sculpted desert valleys, salt flats and geothermal scenery around San Pedro de Atacama. Fly into Calama and allow for the road transfer before treating the first afternoon as sightseeing time.
Next head North, a few kilometres from San Pedro de Atacama, and amongst the hills of sharp rocks and unusual shapes of the Cordillera de la Sal, is the Valley of the Moon, a true geological spectacle that forms part of the National Reserve Los Flamencos. Experience the extravagant landscape forms, which will make you feel like walking on the lunar surface and enjoy unbeatable views of the Andes Mountain Range and its volcanoes. With the arrival of the sunset the golden and red tones transform the desert resulting in a truly breathtaking view.
Continue on to the Atacama Salt Flat, High Plain Lagoons & Socaire and finally to The Tatio Geysers. More than 70 fumaroles jet steam up to 10 metres into the air and form pools of boiling water. As checked on 23 October 2026, El Tatio's operator marks the geothermal pool unavailable for bathing. Do not plan a swim there unless the operator confirms it has reopened.
Keep the boiling geothermal pools for viewing. The Tatio visitor guidance also makes clear that this is a dawn excursion at high altitude, so leave room to adjust the pace. As checked on 23 October 2026, CONAF's Los Flamencos notice lists a Valle de la Luna closure on 27 October 2026; check the notices for your own dates before fixing the excursion order.
Santiago gives a Chile itinerary a city and food chapter between the landscapes. Start in Santiago where you can soak up the mix of modern urban life, rich history and a well established food and wine scene.
Finally, no trip to Chile will be complete without a visit to a famous vineyard or two to sample world renowned wines particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère. For a focused wine day, choose a valley before choosing the tasting: Chile Travel's Wine Route distinguishes Casablanca's white wines from the red wines of Colchagua and Cachapoal.
The capital also matters when linking north and south. Chile Travel's 21 October 2026 flight-planning advice puts Santiago between Patagonia and Calama and advises allowing a substantial part of a day for that transfer. Let Patagonia lead when the mountains and wildlife are the reason for travelling, then fit the other regions around the southern stay. Return further South for a few days in the Torres del Paine National Park and enjoy breathtaking scenery in Patagonia!
Immerse yourself in nature beneath the iconic towering granite peaks, awesome glaciers and abundant wildlife. Relax at one of the park's spas or explore the park for hours on foot or horseback. Your nature adventure doesn't have to stop there, continue on to Punta Arenas on the look out for penguins, whales and birds on a boat tour through the Strait of Magellan, the gateway to Patagonia.

The coast adds culture near Santiago; the Lake District adds another southern base. If you have time for more make sure you visit the colourful coastal town of Valparaiso known for its bohemian culture and street art or discover the Chilean ‘Lake district’ ideal for hiking, kayaking in the foothills of Osorno Volcano.
Valparaíso's UNESCO-listed historic quarter gives a cultural reason to stay on the coast. By contrast, Puerto Varas and Frutillar sit beside Lake Llanquihue, with access through Puerto Montt airport and onwards to lakes and national parks; choose this extension when forest, water and volcanoes deserve their own days.
Yes, Rapa Nui deserves its own stay and flight plan from Santiago. The moai and ceremonial landscape of Rapa Nui National Park bring a different cultural focus from a mainland nature trip.
As checked on 23 October 2026, the official island visitor information directs travellers through Santiago and requires local guiding for the main sites. Check current island entry requirements and guiding arrangements before confirming the extension.
