Day 1.

The Cayo District
Located in the western part of the country and bordering the El Peten department of Guatemala, the Cayo District is an extensive highland strip of tropical forests, ranches, and some of the most remote and rugged areas of the country. It's a region where you're not heading for the beaches (there are none), but rather for Mayan ruins, extensive cave systems, and the opportunity to explore the surroundings on foot, horseback, or by kayak, raft, or canoe. The capital city of the country, Belmopan, is located here, but the real center of the district is San Ignacio, a small town with streets from the colonial era and numerous restaurants and shops. Some of the must-visit attractions in Cayo include the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Barton Creek Cave, and the ancient Mayan city of Caracol.
