Ciudad del Este's main attractions are its shops. Here you can find cheap electronic goods, cigarettes, and alcoholic beverages, as well as excellent snack bars. The majority of the population is of Asian origin: Thai, Korean, Arab, and Iranian, so there are many mosques and pagodas here. The city has experienced significant growth due to the construction of the world's most powerful Itaipu Dam. The so-called "Friendship Bridge" across the Paraná River connects Ciudad del Este with the neighboring Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu. The bridge was opened in 1965 and is just over 552 meters long. It also serves as a border crossing, surrounded by a high fence around its perimeter.
