Founded on August 6, 1538, by the conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, the city was originally named Santa Fe. Jiménez de Quesada arrived in search of the legendary gold of El Dorado and overcame the native Chibcha people in Bacatá, the heart of the Zipa confederation. In 1717, the Kingdom of New Granada was established here, and in 1819, Simón Bolívar selected it as the capital of Gran Colombia.

Excursions in Bogota, the city of museums
Bogota amazes with the number of museums. This is a museum of gold, and a museum of emeralds, the highlight of the collection of which is a crystal of 265 carats. And also — national, archaeological, religious art, maritime, numismatics. Several houses-museums of outstanding Colombians: Simon Bolivar and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
