Galapagos islands: Best time to go

Thinking of going to the Galapagos Islands, good choice, but when should you go?

Whilst you can visit at any time of the year and see the exceptional wildlife that the islands have to offer there are some seasonal variations which can help influence your decision.

The dry season. (June to September). This time of year sees cooler temperatures (around 60-80°F or 15-27°C) and the days are less humid than other seasons. This period is characterised by the Garúa mist, which can mean overcast skies. However this is a great time for observing the unique behaviours of the island's wildlife.  At this time you can see the courtship displays of blue-footed boobies and the nesting of sea turtles.  The cooler weather makes it comfortable for exploring the islands, ideal for hiking and the light is perfect for wildlife photography.  Be aware that this is the peak tourist season, so expect more visitors.

Warm Season (December to January).  This season has warmer temperatures (around 70-90°F or 21-32°C) and the occasional rainfall. The water is also warmer, with good opportunities to see young animals, such as sea lions and marine iguanas. The waters are rich with marine life, making it perfect for diving, snorkelling and swimming and it is especially rewarding during this time due to clear water and abundant marine life. This period coincides with holidays, so it can be busy, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Shoulder Seasons (March to May and October to November)

March to May is when the warm season transitions to a cooler, drier one. Temperatures remain warm, and the waters are still inviting so this is great for observing marine life and bird nesting. Perfect conditions for snorkelling and hiking, with milder temperatures with fewer crowds. This time is also the time when the migratory birds arrive. October to November.  Now the cooler temperatures really start to return, with occasional rains. This is now a good time for seeing sea turtles nesting and marine iguanas becoming more active. With fewer tourists this time of year is ideal for those looking to avoid the crowds.

There are some other considerations when planning your trip to the Galapagos. Prices for accommodation and tours can fluctuate based on the season. Booking in advance is advisable, especially during peak times.  The Galápagos are unique in that wildlife is abundant year-round regardless of the season. Depending on your interests (birdwatching, snorkelling, hiking), certain months may be more favourable for your travel style. If you’re considering a cruise, you need to be aware that some routes may have different highlights depending on the season.
