Los Llanos

Los Llanos in Venezuela

Wild West meets the Serengeti - Los Llanos is a land of cowboys and capybaras. Situated between the soul-stirring sky and the endless plains are two jewels of Los Llanos: the spectacular bird and animal life, and the rugged world of llaneros (Venezuelan cowboys), with the hypnoticly fast finger-picking of joropo music, and the lively coleo , the local version of a rodeo.

Stretching for hundreds of kilometers, the Llanos plains, which occupy almost a third of the country's territory, are an extensive savanna, interrupted in some places by isolated meadows and groves. The Rio Apure River divides the region almost in half, separating the Llano Alto ("upper" or "elevated" plains) from the Llano Bajo ("lowland" plains).

Vacation in Los Llanos

Los Llanos' rich flora and fauna!

During the rainy season (July-November), the plains of Llanos are almost flooded with water, only a few specially raised highways on the embankment remain more or less dry. In the dry season, the earth dries up quickly, and all life is  around reservoirs and streams. The number and diversity of wildlife in Llanos is phenomenal - there are anacondas, caimans, river dolphins, jaguars, cougars, capybaras, monkeys, anteaters, numerous ungulates and a huge number of birds.
