Flores is located in the northeastern part of Guatemala. It is the center of the largest department of the country, El Peten, which occupies about 1/3 of the territory of the state. Its historical part is located on the island of Lake Peten Itza. A jungle-covered area begins not far from the city. It is there, in the Tikal National Park, northeast of Flores, that one of the largest ancient Mayan cities is located.
