Surrounded by three impressive volcanoes, the city was the Guatemala's capital under the Spanish from 1543 to 1776. After numerous earthquakes and volcano eruptions in the 18th century the capital was transferred to Ciudad de Guatemala.
Currently, many artists and foreigners live there and appreciate its beauty and history. For tourists, the city is at its most vibrant during Semana Santa (Easter Week), when the streets are carpeted with elaborate decorations, colored sawdust and flower petals.
