Otаvalo

Colorfully commercial, Otаvalo is internationally famous for its Saturday market - a vivid, festive affair hosted by enthusiastic Otaveleños in traditional dress.

Although this market is certainly legendary, it shouldn't be the only reason you come to this charming Andean small city. The buzzing little burg, whose sidewalks are embossed in red, yellow and blue ( colors of the national flag), is a perfect jumping-off point for regional hikes (Cotacachi, Peguche) or train trips (Ibarra, Salinas). Otаvalo counts with enough interesting restaurants and cafes to sate your taste buds for a few days, as well as a brewpub in town and a few fun weekend bars.

Twice in a week the cemetery springs to life as residents honor their dead with vibrant flowers and hearty meals. You can also enjoy the beautiful landscape around Otavalo such as the Cuicocha Lagoon.
