Colombia adventure travel

Colombia is a fantastic destination for an adventure holiday, offering diverse landscapes with numerous options for thrilling activities.  In a country as big as Colombia the varied geography and rich culture, means it is perfect for adventure seekers looking to experience something unique.   Ada tours is a tour operator with 17 years of experience in South American tourism.  If you’d like help planning a bespoke trip of a lifetime to South America contact Ada tours.

Hiking. Options for hiking are numerous across the country. From the rolling hills of Valle de Cocora, and the volcanic peaks of Los Nevados National Park in the West to the high mountains and jungle of Tayrona National Park in the North East there are so many options to explore.  The Cocora Valley in the central west of the country is renowned for offering gentle hikes amongst the towering wax palms within the famous Colombian coffee region.  The park offers a chance to see the flora and fauna unique to this region of Colombia.  Spend your evenings in the laid back, colourful town of Salento and soaking up the coffee and street culture in numerous independent coffee shops.

For those looking for more of a challenge, the Los Nevados National Natural Park, also in Colombia’s coffee-growing region, offers adventures a unique opportunity to experience hiking surrounded by volcanoes such as the Nevado del Ruiz, Nevado de Santa Isabel, Nevado del Tolima, and the paramillos of Cisne, Santa Rosa and Quindío. Hiking tours can be tailored to suit the ability and needs of any group. The park appeals to adventurers and nature lovers alike due to the blend of rich biodiversity and dramatic sceneries within one of Colombia’s most impressive landscapes.

For a contrast, travel up to the Caribbean coastline near Santa Marta and to Tayrona National Park to camp and hike in the lush jungle to find deserted beaches along the coast, a chance to see unique wildlife and sleep under the stars.  ‘The lost city,’  in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta was built approximately 1,300 years ago, around 800 A.D., is an archaeological site 650 years older than the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu, and can be found in this same region after a 3-5 day hike through jungle and enjoy sleeping outside in the jungle!

Sea adventures. Combine your land based adventures with a few days of relaxation and culture by visiting Cartagena, its tropical beaches and the nearby Islas del Rosario. Cartagena is a gem on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, and it is a city rich in history and culture, offering a unique blend of old-world charm and vibrant local life. Whether you’re exploring the cobblestone streets on a walking tour and delving into Cartagena’s rich history or getting lost amongst the small streets lined with independent shops and restaurants, Cartagena will awaken your senses!   Islas del Rosario is a beautiful archipelago with vibrant coral reefs and crystal-clear waters.  You can go snorkelling, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding or take a boat trip to the islands. Just make sure you finish off the day with a cocktail on the walls of the Baluarte de San Pedro Martir,  to capture the spectacular sunset across the Caribbean sea!

Adventure. Alternatives to hiking include kayaking in the Colombian Amazon, spending hours discovering diverse wildlife and fauna hidden amongst thousands of intricate waterways.  The opportunity to go into the jungle deeper on a guided trek is also a highlight, enabling you to immerse yourself fully in this region which boasts huge biodiversity.   Continue your journey to the hilly town of San Gil, the adventure capital of Colombia for the chance to mountain bike, paraglide, whitewater raft, go caving or mountain biking amongst beautiful landscapes and alongside (or in!) rivers.  Finally, explore the Pozos Wells and the Iguaque National Park on horseback, another distinctly unique experience located just outside the charming colonial town of Villa de Leyva, mixing adventure with culture.
