The Casablanca Valley is the coolest region in Chile, located on the coast near the port of Valparaiso. The vineyards are cooled by morning fogs, the result of the cold Pacific current, and frequent clouds slow down the ripening of the grapes. In 1982, the first vineyards were planted, Pablo Moranda established the first vineyard in the valley, planting mainly white varieties (Chardonnay). Before that it was believed that the climate here was too cold for viticulture. In 1993, there were about 1,500 hectares of vineyards here. Casablanca has become synonymous with quality Chilean white wine. The visiting card of Casablanca is Chardonnay. A rich variety of soil types and marine microclimate make this region incredibly fertile.
